Endoscopic Sinus Surgery

For the second time (03 December 2012), I went in for Endoscopic Sinus Surgery.  This is done to remove polyps that grow and eventually start blocking off the the sinuses.  The first surgery was done seven years ago in December 2005.

This most recent surgery was done at the AF Hospital Same Day Surgery by Dr. Todd Hamilton.  All went well until during recovery when I thought that I was well enough to sit up and start getting dressed to go home.  Suddenly, I felt nauseated and before I knew it I was vomiting.  Once that was over, I felt good enough for my wife to drive me back home.

Right after arriving at home and making it up to our bedroom, I started vomiting once again.  I was unaware that so much blood was still dripping and making it to my stomach.  After this second bout, I was fine and able to relax in the easy-chair for the rest of the night.  In fact, I slept the entire night in the easy-chair.

This morning, I woke up feeling a lot better.  Was able to finally eat something solid-- having not eaten anything since late Sunday night.  My wife, Debbie, needed to head out this morning to St. George, Utah for a UHP conference during the next few days, so my kids will have to keep an eye on me until I'm fully functional.

Marc Alan Davis

A week or so ago, I had heard that one of my childhood friends, Marc Davis,  had taken his own life.  This morning, I read his death notice online in the Daily Herald.

Marc's family was our backdoor neighbors while growing up in West Provo, Utah, and we played together from as far back as I can remember, even though he was about 2 years younger than me.  Most times, our fun involved bicycles and pretending to be motocross riders or Evel Knievel.  Together, we would get into trouble with either our parents or various of the neighbors.

After I started attending 7th grade and beyond, Marc and I slowly stopped doing things together, but we'd see each other over the fence from time to time.  I don't know all that he was experiencing in recent years, but it appears that Marc had some difficulties that seemed to have weighed heavily upon him.

I'm thankful for the rush of memories that have come back in recent days since learning of Marc's passing.  With his dad and mom preceding him in death, this leaves his older brother, Wayne, as the surviving member of the Davis family.

Mads Johnson

My great-grandfather, Mads Johnson (1860 - 1928). He was a fruit farmer in the Lakeview area north of Provo, Utah.  Mention is made that he was a Deputy Sheriff, but I don't have any other information on how long his law enforcement career lasted.

Times Are Changing

Yesterday, I attended the Elders Quorum meeting as part of my assignment as a member of the Stake High Council.  It's always great to sit in with the Elders!  As the lesson started off, the instructor asked if I would read a scripture, and so I began turning the pages of my scriptures to find the particular verses.  While doing so, the instructor pointed out that I was the only on there with the traditional paper standard works-- everyone else had smartphones that contained the standard works.

Was I embarrassed? Not at all!  I figure that I will be one of the dwindling few old-timers that still takes their leather-bound scriptures to church meetings each week.  I enjoy having marked scriptures, with my own personal notations, at my fingertips.

For the up and coming generation-- more power to you all!  If you are able to get the same experience from the electronic scriptures that I get from my traditional scriptures, then I am happy for you all.  I also personally believe that more of the Elders nowadays are coming to their church meetings with their scriptures in hand because of the advancement of technology.

(As a side note, I did observe one other Elder there with a traditional set of scriptures.)

Leading off the Primary parade

Once again, I was invited to lead the Edgemont 2nd Ward's Primary Pioneer Parade in East Provo, Ut.  It was as simple as driving around the block with the kids and adults following behind.

Deactivating Facebook

I am temporarily deactivating my Facebook account beginning tomorrow.  I signed up for Facebook about 3 years ago as a means of trying to get our PHS Class of 1982 Reunions back on track, and it proved to be successful.  But now it's time to do other things rather than spending time each day reading everyone's status updates.  I need to focus on other important things in life.

America's greatest Town Sheriff is gone

My favorite TV show has always been "The Andy Griffith Show".  Andy passed away today in North Carolina.  Here's hoping that the reruns continue for a long time to come.
